Working in Carindale
Carindale is mostly brick and tile houses on concrete slabs, built from the late 1970s onwards on curving streets that climb away from Westfield Carindale and the golf course. Many have been extended, with timber decks, patios and pools added at the back. The bushland along Bulimba Creek and over the hills means wildlife is often close to the back fence.
Parking is easy on most Carindale streets and driveways are wide, but on the steeper blocks some houses have a lower level built into the slope, a retaining wall at the back and a garden that steps down. We check the roof void through the manhole, then walk the whole perimeter, which on a sloping block can include tight spaces behind retaining walls and under raised decks.
A slab home is not out of reach for termites. They come up through cracks and joints in the slab or around plumbing, and reach the timber unseen behind brickwork or through garden beds piled against the wall. Weep holes covered by soil or mulch, timber decks against the house and old sleeper retaining walls are the risks we look at hardest on Carindale's sloping blocks.
What we do here most
What Carindale homes keep needing
The jobs below come from slab homes with decks and gardens, and the bushland that runs behind them.
Termites
Termite barrier around an older slab home
Houses built decades ago may have had a barrier that has long since run its course, or none on record at all. We walk the perimeter, pull garden beds away from the slab edge where needed, trench and treat the soil, and treat beneath paths that run against the wall. Areas we cannot reach, such as under a sealed deck, are named in writing.
Possums
A possum getting in from the bushland
Streets backing onto bushland and creek corridors can see possums moving between the trees and the rooftops at night. The usual way in is a gap at the eaves, a loose roof tile or a broken vent. We find the gap, get the possum out, close the opening and suggest which branches near the roof are worth trimming back.
Ants
Ants coming up through pool pavers
Pavers around a pool or patio laid on sandy bedding can be an easy home for ants, and the trail often runs straight into the kitchen or under the sliding door. We identify the ant, follow the trail back to the nest, and place bait or treatment where it will be carried home, then explain why the trail should be left unwiped.
Spiders
Redbacks around the pool fence and decks
Pool fences, the underside of outdoor furniture and the gaps under timber decks are places redbacks can settle. We check those areas, brush down webs from the eaves and the patio, and treat outside around the house and inside where spiders are getting in. You are told how long to keep children and pets away from the treated areas.
If it is urgent
If you find termite mud on a Carindale wall
- 1Look without touching. Thin mud tubes on the slab edge, behind a downpipe or up the inside of a garage wall are common signs here, along with skirting boards that sound hollow when tapped.
- 2Do not break the mud, spray it or pull off the damaged timber. Termites that are disturbed often move away and go quiet, which makes them harder to find and treat properly.
- 3When you call, tell us where you found it, whether the house has a timber deck or retaining wall against it, and whether any barrier or paperwork exists from earlier treatments.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which areas do you cover?
Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland, from our base at Hope Island. Twelve suburbs have their own pages on the service areas page, but they are a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are unsure whether we reach your suburb, call us and we will check.
Do you answer the phone after hours?
Yes. The phone is answered at any hour, every day, on the same number shown at the top of this page. Call with your location and what you are seeing, and we will talk you through what to do next.
Do you work on businesses as well as homes?
Yes. We work in family homes, rentals and apartments, and in shops, offices, food businesses and commercial properties. Commercial visits are set around trading hours, and the treatment details are recorded after each visit.
Can you quote over the phone?
We can often give guidance from a clear description and a few photos. Termite work and more complex problems usually need someone on site before an accurate treatment price is possible, because what is in the roof, the walls or the subfloor decides the scope.
Why do pest control quotes vary so much?
The pest, how established it is, the size of the property, access, the treatment method and any follow-up visits all change the scope and the price. When you compare quotes, compare the areas treated, the method, the preparation and the follow-up that is included. A lower total can simply mean a narrower job.
What details should I give you when I call?
Tell us where and when you saw the pest or the sign of it, and take a clear photo if it is safe to do so. Mention any spray or bait already used, and tell us about children, pets and anyone with allergies in the house. All of that helps us prepare before we arrive.
Should I disturb termites if I find them?
No. Leave the mud leads and damaged timber exactly as they are, do not spray the area, and call us to arrange an inspection. Termites that are disturbed often move away and go quiet, which makes the activity harder to assess and treat.
Can I spray a wasp nest before you arrive?
Please do not approach or disturb an active nest. Keep people and pets away from it and call us for advice that suits where the nest is and how big it has grown.
What should I do after a bite or a bad sting?
Get medical help first, and call for urgent help straight away if someone has trouble breathing or a severe reaction. Dealing with the pest comes after everyone is safe.
What do I need to know about children and pets?
The preparation and re-entry instructions matter, so we go through them with you before we start. Tell us about every animal in the house, including fish and birds, and we will explain what to move, cover or keep away before we start.
What should I keep after a treatment?
Keep the invoice, the treatment details, any safety directions and our recommendations, along with any termite paperwork the job produced. If anything on them is unclear, ask and we will explain it.
Will one treatment keep pests away for good?
No treatment removes every future risk. Long-term protection comes from the right treatment, regular checks and practical changes around the property, such as fixing leaks, clearing garden beds from the walls and sealing the gaps pests use.
Does a clean home still need pest control?
Often, yes. Cleaning removes food, but pests still come in looking for water and shelter. Entry points, moisture and termite risk have nothing to do with how clean the kitchen is.
How often should I have a termite inspection?
It depends on the property and its risk factors, such as its age, construction, garden and history. After an inspection we can recommend a schedule that suits that house rather than a one-size answer.
Will supermarket spray get rid of a nest?
It may kill the insects you can see without reaching the nest or colony they came from. The right response depends on the species and where it is living, which is why identification comes first.
