Working in Southport
Southport is the Gold Coast's business centre, and it looks it: towers along the Broadwater, offices and shops around Australia Fair and Nerang Street, and the light rail running through to the university and the hospital. Many visits are to a tower, a unit or a shop. Behind the main roads there are older brick, fibro and timber homes from several decades, plus plenty of units and student housing.
Parking near the light rail and the Broadwater is metered and tight, so we use visitor parking or a loading dock in the towers and book access with building managers ahead of time. In the residential streets parking is easier. The older low-set homes here are usually on slabs or short stumps, so the roof void and the perimeter are where most of the checking happens.
Student housing near Griffith University and the short-term rentals near the Broadwater see a steady turnover of people and luggage, which is one way bed bugs and cockroaches travel. Restaurants and food courts around the centre often need steady rat and cockroach control as well. Older homes behind the main roads carry the usual termite risks of aged timber and established gardens.
What we do here most
What Southport properties keep needing
Towers, student rooms, food businesses and the older homes behind them each bring their own jobs.
Bed bugs
Bed bugs in student rooms near the university
Student rooms change hands every semester, and bed bugs arrive in luggage and second-hand furniture. We inspect the bed, the desk chair and the furniture near the bed, treat where activity is found and give the student a clear preparation list. In shared houses and managed buildings we check the neighbouring rooms too, because bed bugs travel.
Commercial
Pest control in a food court tenancy
A food court tenancy shares walls, drains and storage with its neighbours, so cockroaches and rats move between them. We work outside trading hours, treat the cracks, hinges and motor housings where cockroaches breed, check the monitoring stations and record what was done. If the problem is building-wide, we tell centre management what we found.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches in a high-rise unit
Cockroaches in a tower unit often travel up through risers and plumbing shared with the floors below. We treat your kitchen, bathrooms and laundry with gel bait, show you the gaps around pipes where they come through, and suggest what to raise with the building manager. If they look widespread, we say so.
Termites
Termite inspection on an older brick home
Older brick homes behind the main roads were built long before the barrier systems used on new homes today. We walk the perimeter, look at weep holes, garden beds and paths against the walls, check the roof void and anything timber in contact with the ground, and give you the findings in writing, including anything we could not reach.
If it is urgent
If bed bugs turn up in a Southport room
- 1Look closely at the mattress seams, the bed frame joins and the headboard for small dark spots, shed skins or live bugs. Bites in a line or a cluster on waking are a common first sign.
- 2Do not move the mattress to another room, sleep somewhere else in the house or throw furniture out yet. Moving things around carries bed bugs into rooms that were clear.
- 3When you call, tell us whether it is a student room, a unit or short stay accommodation, how many rooms are affected, and who manages the building, so the treatment and follow-up can be planned.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which areas do you cover?
Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland, from our base at Hope Island. Twelve suburbs have their own pages on the service areas page, but they are a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are unsure whether we reach your suburb, call us and we will check.
Do you answer the phone after hours?
Yes. The phone is answered at any hour, every day, on the same number shown at the top of this page. Call with your location and what you are seeing, and we will talk you through what to do next.
Do you work on businesses as well as homes?
Yes. We work in family homes, rentals and apartments, and in shops, offices, food businesses and commercial properties. Commercial visits are set around trading hours, and the treatment details are recorded after each visit.
Can you quote over the phone?
We can often give guidance from a clear description and a few photos. Termite work and more complex problems usually need someone on site before an accurate treatment price is possible, because what is in the roof, the walls or the subfloor decides the scope.
Why do pest control quotes vary so much?
The pest, how established it is, the size of the property, access, the treatment method and any follow-up visits all change the scope and the price. When you compare quotes, compare the areas treated, the method, the preparation and the follow-up that is included. A lower total can simply mean a narrower job.
What details should I give you when I call?
Tell us where and when you saw the pest or the sign of it, and take a clear photo if it is safe to do so. Mention any spray or bait already used, and tell us about children, pets and anyone with allergies in the house. All of that helps us prepare before we arrive.
Should I disturb termites if I find them?
No. Leave the mud leads and damaged timber exactly as they are, do not spray the area, and call us to arrange an inspection. Termites that are disturbed often move away and go quiet, which makes the activity harder to assess and treat.
Can I spray a wasp nest before you arrive?
Please do not approach or disturb an active nest. Keep people and pets away from it and call us for advice that suits where the nest is and how big it has grown.
What should I do after a bite or a bad sting?
Get medical help first, and call for urgent help straight away if someone has trouble breathing or a severe reaction. Dealing with the pest comes after everyone is safe.
What do I need to know about children and pets?
The preparation and re-entry instructions matter, so we go through them with you before we start. Tell us about every animal in the house, including fish and birds, and we will explain what to move, cover or keep away before we start.
What should I keep after a treatment?
Keep the invoice, the treatment details, any safety directions and our recommendations, along with any termite paperwork the job produced. If anything on them is unclear, ask and we will explain it.
Will one treatment keep pests away for good?
No treatment removes every future risk. Long-term protection comes from the right treatment, regular checks and practical changes around the property, such as fixing leaks, clearing garden beds from the walls and sealing the gaps pests use.
Does a clean home still need pest control?
Often, yes. Cleaning removes food, but pests still come in looking for water and shelter. Entry points, moisture and termite risk have nothing to do with how clean the kitchen is.
How often should I have a termite inspection?
It depends on the property and its risk factors, such as its age, construction, garden and history. After an inspection we can recommend a schedule that suits that house rather than a one-size answer.
Will supermarket spray get rid of a nest?
It may kill the insects you can see without reaching the nest or colony they came from. The right response depends on the species and where it is living, which is why identification comes first.
