Pest controller in Wynnum, QLD

Working in Wynnum

Wynnum sits right on Moreton Bay, and the foreshore with its jetty, the wading pool and the mangrove boardwalk sets the feel of the whole suburb. Behind it the streets are full of old Queenslanders, post-war timber cottages and a growing number of townhouses, many on blocks that have been subdivided. Edith Street and the shops around Wynnum Central are the busy middle.

Salt air off the bay is hard on everything in Wynnum, from roof screws to fly screens, and gaps that open up in an older roofline are an easy way in for rats and possums. Many of the older houses are high-set or partly built in underneath, so the subfloor is easy to reach on some and hidden behind sheeting on others. Street parking is usually simple, apart from the foreshore on weekends.

Moreton Bay, the creeks and the mangroves bring plenty of moisture, and the ground near the water drains well in some places and stays damp in others. Old timber stumps, timber stairs resting on the ground and garden beds against the house are the termite risks we look at hardest here. Rats can be more common near the waterfront, where bins, fruit trees and dense planting give them food and cover.

What we do here most

What Wynnum homes keep needing

Older timber houses near the bay, where salt air and moisture open up the ways in, set the jobs here.

Termites

Termite inspection on a bayside Queenslander

An old Queenslander near the water has decades of changes underneath: replaced stumps, a laundry built in downstairs, timber stairs resting on the ground. Each one is a possible way in. We check the stumps and ant caps, the bearers and joists, the built-in areas and the roof void, then set out what we found and what needs attention in writing.

Rats and mice

Rats in the roof near the foreshore

Rats near the bay can climb palms, fruit trees and fences to reach the roofline, and salt-worn gaps at the eaves can let them in. We check the roof void, place lockable stations along the runways, and look along the outside for the gap they are using. Proofing those gaps is listed separately so you can see what keeps them out.

Possums

A possum under the iron of an old cottage

On an older cottage the roof sheets have often lifted at the edges and the gable vents have rusted through, and a possum only needs a small opening. We find where it is getting in, get it out once it has left for the night, and close the gap with mesh and talk you through the trees and wires that lead onto the roof.

Spiders

Spiders on verandahs and under the house

Wide verandahs, lattice screening and the space under a high-set house give spiders plenty of shelter, and outdoor lights draw in the insects they feed on. We brush down the webs, treat the verandah, eaves and under-house areas, then treat inside along skirtings and windows. Before we start, we talk through the products with you, and what to do about children and pets.

If it is urgent

If you find termites in a Wynnum house

  1. 1Look without touching. Mud tubes on a stump, soft timber in the stairs or a skirting board that gives way under a finger are common signs in older bayside homes.
  2. 2Do not spray the area, break open the mud or pull the timber apart. Disturbed termites often move and go quiet, which makes the treatment harder and slower to work.
  3. 3When you call, tell us where you found them, whether the house is high-set or built in underneath, and whether any old barrier or treatment paperwork exists for the house.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas do you cover?

Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland, from our base at Hope Island. Twelve suburbs have their own pages on the service areas page, but they are a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are unsure whether we reach your suburb, call us and we will check.

Do you answer the phone after hours?

Yes. The phone is answered at any hour, every day, on the same number shown at the top of this page. Call with your location and what you are seeing, and we will talk you through what to do next.

Do you work on businesses as well as homes?

Yes. We work in family homes, rentals and apartments, and in shops, offices, food businesses and commercial properties. Commercial visits are set around trading hours, and the treatment details are recorded after each visit.

Can you quote over the phone?

We can often give guidance from a clear description and a few photos. Termite work and more complex problems usually need someone on site before an accurate treatment price is possible, because what is in the roof, the walls or the subfloor decides the scope.

Why do pest control quotes vary so much?

The pest, how established it is, the size of the property, access, the treatment method and any follow-up visits all change the scope and the price. When you compare quotes, compare the areas treated, the method, the preparation and the follow-up that is included. A lower total can simply mean a narrower job.

What details should I give you when I call?

Tell us where and when you saw the pest or the sign of it, and take a clear photo if it is safe to do so. Mention any spray or bait already used, and tell us about children, pets and anyone with allergies in the house. All of that helps us prepare before we arrive.

Should I disturb termites if I find them?

No. Leave the mud leads and damaged timber exactly as they are, do not spray the area, and call us to arrange an inspection. Termites that are disturbed often move away and go quiet, which makes the activity harder to assess and treat.

Can I spray a wasp nest before you arrive?

Please do not approach or disturb an active nest. Keep people and pets away from it and call us for advice that suits where the nest is and how big it has grown.

What should I do after a bite or a bad sting?

Get medical help first, and call for urgent help straight away if someone has trouble breathing or a severe reaction. Dealing with the pest comes after everyone is safe.

What do I need to know about children and pets?

The preparation and re-entry instructions matter, so we go through them with you before we start. Tell us about every animal in the house, including fish and birds, and we will explain what to move, cover or keep away before we start.

What should I keep after a treatment?

Keep the invoice, the treatment details, any safety directions and our recommendations, along with any termite paperwork the job produced. If anything on them is unclear, ask and we will explain it.

Will one treatment keep pests away for good?

No treatment removes every future risk. Long-term protection comes from the right treatment, regular checks and practical changes around the property, such as fixing leaks, clearing garden beds from the walls and sealing the gaps pests use.

Does a clean home still need pest control?

Often, yes. Cleaning removes food, but pests still come in looking for water and shelter. Entry points, moisture and termite risk have nothing to do with how clean the kitchen is.

How often should I have a termite inspection?

It depends on the property and its risk factors, such as its age, construction, garden and history. After an inspection we can recommend a schedule that suits that house rather than a one-size answer.

Will supermarket spray get rid of a nest?

It may kill the insects you can see without reaching the nest or colony they came from. The right response depends on the species and where it is living, which is why identification comes first.
